Tour of Spain - Winter 2012/13

Postby brian.denton » Sat Apr 28, 2012 5:55 pm

Jill & I have been looking at this more closely and it is currently looking likely that we will do it (as a tour rather than a rally). Those participating could do part or all of the tour.

The outline plan is depart in the latter part of Dec. from Portsmouth to Santander staying for a short time at Santillana, about 12 miles from the port and near to the Picos de Europa which is one of the most scenic parts of Spain.( http://www.campingcheque.co.uk/spain/sa ... -c412.html )

- Travel just south of Madrid to Aranjuez, the spring residence of the kings of Spain, to visit the Palaces and gardens, also possible to visit Madrid from here.(http://www.campingaranjuez.co.uk)
- Then on to the Costa Blanca to Camping Marjal at Guardamar del Segura (see http://www.campingmarjal.com) to spend Christmas and New Year.
- From here we may move a little further south to camping La Manga, . The campsite is on El Mar Menor and has a lovely beach bar / restaurant.(http://www.caravaning.es).
- Guejar Sierra nr. Granada would be the next stop (a haunt of David & Sam Cameron). The campsite, Las Lomas, which is amongst our favourites, looks out to the fantastic views of the Sierra Nevada where there should be plenty of skiing at this time of year. The campsite restaurant is excellent. The bus stops outside of the site and it just takes 30mins to get to the centre of Granada. Visit the Alhambra, shop in El Corte de Ingles, visit the Cathedral or just take in the atmosphere of the countless squares, cafes, tapas bars and restaurants.(http://www.campinglaslomas.com)
- The Costa del Sol is next with a visit to Camping Cabopino near Fuengirola. A good base for exploring Marbella, Malaga, Nerja, Ronda and Cordoba.(http://www.campingcabopino.com/)
- On the way back from here stay at Caseres (http://www.campingcaceres.com) or Salamanca ( Camping Regio ) (or both) before driving back to Santander for the ferry.
- Travel back to Portsmouth in the latter part of Feb or early Mar 2013.

The total distance driven in Spain would be around 1,500 miles, mostly on motorways and most of which are toll free and not crowded. By using ACSI and Camping Cheques the site costs will be about 16 euros per night, the cost of the ferry crossing is not known at this stage but we expect it to be around £900 return for the 24 hr crossing.
